PIC32 Tic Tac Toe Demonstration of using touch screen TFT and the Protothreads threading library

I had previously used the Adafruit TFT display using my library (ported from the Adafruit Arduino library). I decided to optimize the library to improve drawing speed. The same display I use comes with a 4-wire resistive touch-screen as well. I decided to write a simple library for the touch-screen and give Protothreads a try. To incorporate all this, I thought it would be cool if I used these to make a simple game. Tic-tac-toe came to mind as a fun little demo. I'm sure everyone's familiar with the game so I won't explain the rules there. The touch-screen is simply two resistive sheets placed on top of each other on top of the TFT screen. When it is pressed down at a given place, the two sheets make contact and a voltage divider is formed. Using the IO's and the ADC, this voltage is read in the X and Y directions to register a touch. Here is a very good pictorial depiction of the resistive touch screen (taken from the Atmel AVR341 document ): So in order to read the to...

The monophonic 270 watt Double barreled Amplifier

This amplifier is the monophonic 270 watt Double barreled Amplifier. For the original article, I specified plus and minus 85 V dc power supply voltages. The voltage can be increased to about 93 V to obtain a power rating of 300 W. The amplifier can be built either as a stereophonic or a monoponic unit. My original amps were mono units because the heat sinks, transformer, and filter caps that I used were too large for a stereo amp. The circuit described on this page is a modification of the original Double Barreled Amplifier. The circuit has been simplified somewhat. The circuit board layout is smaller and much more compact. The driver transistors now mount on the circuit board instead of on external heat sinks. And the circuit has the feedforward compensation that I describe for the Low TIM Amplifier. If you build this amplifier, you must keep the wiring between the heat sinks and the circuit boards as short as possible if you don't want oscillation problems. When you test the circ...

Google might have revealed the new Nexus 6

Well, Google I / O 2014 is very close and some clues about new devices or software may be popping up any day now. Moreover, it is possible that Google has revealed the Nexus 6 through his Twitter account to promote the role of voice 'OK Google '. Of course, this could just be a representation of a device or simply the next Nexus phone. In the published photo, Google shows a cell with a very thin bezel and a design that does not currently see in the market. At the bottom of the image is the cheese section of a supermarket and not much pointing to the name of the next version of Android, as there are many desserts in the image. Could it be that Google knocked on the next version of Android with a name of cheese? I really doubt it and may be just the background image that focused only on promoting functionality. The Android phone image would appear to be a little larger than 5 inches in May Nexus website and given the size it occupies in hand. Apparently might be 5.2 or 5.5...

The New Technology of Auto Sound Systems

So what kind of auto sound system really seems to float your boat? Are you the type of person who wants the simplest sound system on the market today? Will you be content with talk radio and a few FM radio stations? Do you need an 8-track? How about a cassette player? I hate to say it, but if you are still living in the past, you will have a rather difficult time finding an audio system for your car that can accommodate your desire to hold technology behind the current trends. These things simply do not sell. You may find an occasional auto sound system that still has a cassette player but for the most part you will find that the market for this device is almost as limited as the quality of the device itself. Today's auto sound systems are more sophisticated than they have ever been before. Gone are the days when you had to turn a dial to find a radio station. Today you can set your car to scan the stations until you find one you like. You can even set them to scan radio stations b...

Testing the Photovoltaic Effect with a Transistor

Most photovoltaic cells are made of silicon chip above which there resides a very thin layer of noble metal through which around 1% of photon particles enter the material and activates electron flow. Here I’m showing how to make one simple solar panel using transistor. [ ]

A Comparative Study between two 32 bit microcontrollers the Atmel AT91SAM3X8E and the Microchip PIC32MX250F128B

As previously mentioned (http://www.blogspot.com/2016/09/200000-views-ithaca-arm-and-dmips.html) I’m doing an independent study under the supervision of Professor Bruce Land here at Cornell University. A semester has passed and I will be continuing my independent study next semester. The independent study (that I'm doing and will be continuing) is on exploring and comparing the peripheral modules of the Microchip PIC32MX250F128B (on the Microstick II platform) and the Atmel AT91SAM3X8E (on the Arduino Due platform). This semester, I've done a good amount of introductory exploration of the two 32-bit microcontrollers. Here are the links to the datasheets of the two microcontrollers on which my independent study is based: AT91SAM3X8E: www.atmel.com/Images/doc11057.pdf PIC32MX250F128B: http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/61168E.pdf The Microchip PIC32MX250F128B is a 32-bit RISC microcontroller based on the MIPS M4K core. In this independent study, I have used the Micro...

The Audio Video Distribution Amplifier Circuit Diagram

With the amount of equipment in home entertainment centers today the need to be able to vary the gain of the audio or video signal is needed. I found this particular circuit helpful when used in conjunction with the Universal De scrambler and a Stabilizer circuit I built for making copies of video tapes. It not only allowed me the ability to fine tune the video strength it also helped me increase the recorded audio which typically becomes poor when making tape copies. Circuit operation is straight forward for amplifier circuits. The second channel for the audio amplifier is made up of the same components except the other half of IC1 is used. Pin 6 & 5 are inputs and 7 is the output. Audio/Video Distribution Amplifier Circuit Diagram

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge cell with curved screen that shows us the future

One of the most exciting news is when we know of 'futuristic' devices will probably inspire you to move forward in design and in different ways. It is something that Samsung intends to offer the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge . The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is unlike any other phone we've seen in the market, but uses basically the same concept flexible display the company showed at CES 2012. The Galaxy Note has a QHD screen Edge (2K) 5.6 megapixel (2,560x 1,440), the same as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 inches only smaller. No enmbargo on the right edge of the screen is folded and covers part of the right edge of the cell. This edge has a bar full of icons, widgets and useful information that can function apart from the front of the display or may display related to the application that is in the main part menus. The Curve Bar display can be rotated by swiping your finger across the edge to provide icons, shortcuts, S Health data, markers games, weather and more. You slide sideway...

Brewmonitor The Arduino powered cloud based homebrewing controller

It’s just a basic site, based on this Scotch.io tutorial, which is currently plotting the temperature in my sitting room. It’s got a PHP backend (Laravel framework with RESTful API), MySQL database and an AngularJS frontend with (n3-chart/d3 for the graph). In the house, I’ve whacked together a quick breadboard circuit which comprises of an Arduino clone, a DS18B20 Temperature Sensor (with resistor for the i2c connection) and an ESP8266 module. Every minute, this wireless sensor POSTs the temperature to our REST API. This value is saved in the database and will appear in the graph whenever the page is opened. To hook it up to a fermenter, the sensor would just be placed in a thermowell in the fermenter bucket so we can see the beer temperature over time. [ ]

Electricity and the Electron

What is electricity? Electricity is the   flow of charge   around a circuit   carrying energy   from the battery (or power supply) to components such as lamps and motors. Electricity can flow only if there is a  complete circuit  from the battery through wires to components and back to the battery again. The diagram shows a simple circuit of a battery, wires, a switch and a lamp. The switch works by breaking the circuit. With the  switch open  the circuit is broken - so electricity cannot flow and the lamp is off. With the  switch closed  the circuit is complete - allowing electricity to flow and the lamp is on. The electricity is carrying energy from the battery to the lamp. We can see, hear or feel the effects of electricity flowing such as a lamp lighting, a bell ringing, or a motor turning - but we cannot see the electricity itself, so which way is it flowing?  Imaginary positive particles moving in the direction of the conventi...

Know the Line Follower Robot

Line Follower Robot Glance - Line Follower Robot - a kind of robot which included into the category robotmobile are designed to work in an autonomous and have the ability to detect and move to follow (follows) the existing line on the surface. Control system used is designed to feel that there are pathways of movement and maneuver in order to remain able to follow that line. Robots of this type quite a lot of interest for those who are just learning to robot technology. Even competitions Line Follower Robot, often held regularly at various universities .In industry, robots of this type is often used to to move goods from one place to another. By modifying slightly the sensor line follower robot can then be developed into a Wall Follower Robot, a robot that can move around the wall. Sensor On Line Follower Robot Sensors , can be analogous to the 'eye' of a robot that serves to 'read' the black line of the track robot. So that the robot is able to know when he will turn r...

The Chinas ZTE launches Firefox phones in US Britain

WASHINGTON — Chinese telecom giant ZTE announced plans Monday to sell a low-cost smartphone using the open source Firefox operating system in the United States and Britain. ZTE said its Open Firefox OS phone will be sold through eBay in the US for $79.99 and 59.99 pounds in Britain. Smart Lighting in the Enterprise

Daylight harvesting is becoming increasingly important in the design and implementation of commercial lighting systems. Being able to integrate the natural light from windows with flexible, controllable sources of lighting helps improve the work environment and cut energy bills. Being able to have closer control of the lighting systems in a commercial environment is a key element to this strategy and energy harvesting can play an important role. Being able to have flexible placement of control pads for a commercial lighting system is an important requirement as office space is regularly reconfigured as existing clients grow and change their requirements and new clients have new requirements. The neck joint

This was the bit I had been most worried about. The neck joint. You see, if you get this bit wrong, even by a couple of mm, then the guitar will be unplayable. Of course you can always fix mistakes, but it's much better to do it right in the first place. So here was the challenge. I had hardly any tools and had to rout out the joint. I could do it the same way as the rest of the routing, but that would leave me with a pretty uneven surface. It really had to be dead on. So I did it in two stages. First I did the same as the rest of the routing, then I finished it off with a small straight routing bit attached to the drill. The drill was attached to a drill stand (or drill press), and I set the limiter so that it would stop at just the right height for the surface of the neck joint. There was a bit of a problem though. I only have two hands. The drill stand's lever was spring loaded, so I had to keep one hand on that, leaving just one to somehow move the guitar around. In the end...

PIC32 SPI Using the MCP4822 12 bit serial dual DAC

I recently got a few pieces of the MCP4822 DAC. You can check out the datasheet here: http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/22249A.pdf I found them to be neat little devices. In a small 8-pin PDIP package, the MCP4822 comes with 2 12-bit DACs, which you can easily configure over SPI. This was a great opportunity to get a simple PIC32 SPI application going. I worked on this today to see how fast I can get the DAC output going. Here's the pinout of the MCP4822: Fig. 1 - MCP4822 pinout (taken from datasheet) The MCP4822 can be supplied a voltage in the range of 2.7V to 5.5V. Since I use 3.3V for my PIC32, I used the same 3.3V supply for the VDD for the MCP4822. Pin 5 is the active low signal LDAC that is used to synchronize the two DAC channels. When this pin is brought low, the data in the DAC's input register is copied to the output and both outputs are updated at the same time. I just had this tied to ground. VoutA and VoutB are the two output pins. The other pins are...
